Committed to Humanitarian Cause in the Aftermath of Cyclonic Storm Nargis in Burma

We , with the fellow Burmese people in and outside Burma , and the people of the world, have been caught in ultimate griefs and anxieties for the unprecedented plight of the victims of cyclonic storm Nargis , which has compelled us to submit this petition as we are getting through these agonizing weeks of despair and powerlessness since we all learned that this natural disaster has turned into a man-made one because xenophobic Burmese military junta is unnecessarily restricting international aids and rescue operations .

At this very moment of preparing this petition, over 100,000 lives and their families had lost and separated , let alone damages of properties and farmlands when the cyclone rampaged the Irrawaddy Delta and its neighborhoods, the most densely populated areas in Burma. Approximately 100,000 people were injured and if emergency aids and medical assistance are pending at this rate to reach the victims , there will be a million of people in desperation with hunger and diseases and so death toll will be exponential by the end of this month .

If the international governments and the UN have genuine desire to extend their humanitarian hands to the dying and needy in Burma , they should and must not expect any approval from the military junta , which is illegitimate , unconstitutional and publicly unapproved .The junta illegally seized power in 1988 and does not recognize the 1990 general election results that have overwhelmingly expressed by the people of Burma .

The election winner , the National League for Democracy (NLD) , ethnic political parties, the NGO’s and the people of Burma have unanimously welcomed the international relief efforts for this humongous disaster recovery work .To delay or hesitate to reach the victims means to push them away to the abyss of suffering to death . The situations of victims have rapidly stagnated to the point of massive deaths as time is ticking, from seconds to minutes , from hours to days, and from weeks to the month as opposed to what the junta -run media reported that the circumstances had returned to normalcy .

The shipments of relief items donated by other countries have been abused by the junta’s rank and file , police , vigilantes and militia gangs such as power lords(Swan-ahr-shin) and USDA ( Union Solidarity & Development Assoc).Majority of the relief items are being sold in the open markets . Time-sensitive items were expired during storage in military warehouses. In fact, the relief efforts are mere additional supplies to the junta’s stockpiles of rationing for its troops.

The junta is not elected by the people of Burma and the thugs so-called generals do not care any loss of human life , but only concentrate to continue gripping on power through the medium of fear and arms .The junta use of coercions and intimidations have been evident in recent polling processes of referendum .

The junta is responsible for the massive deaths of cyclonic victims for failing to publicly declare emergency weather warning to the people although military authorities were informed sufficiently early to make preparations.

The junta stands as the great wall of barrier between the victims and international relief personnel at this critical moment .In reality , the military junta dictates all ways of life of the Burmese people , ruthlessly sacrificing them on the road to power for well over 45 years , let alone freedom, human rights and democracy for the Burmese people .

Last but certainly not least , we, would hereby request , with the entire masses of the Burmese people , the international governments and the UN to immediately deploy their rescue missions with the protections of international peacekeeping forces to directly and personally carry out relief efforts without further delay or hesitation. If possible, we would like to request to demilitarize Burma by dissolving the country’s defense mechanisms and thereby ensuring security , peace and prosperity of the nation and the region .
