Restore Colin Saltry's Class Presidency

To:  School Board of Scranton, PA

We, the undersigned, do hereby petition the school board of Scranton, Pennsylvania to:





1. Restore Colin Saltry to his position of President of his Senior Class of 2008.





2. Remove the one-day suspension from the records of both Mr. Saltry and Mr. Joey Daniel.





Their actions, specifically their choice to leave school grounds without explicitly granted permission to meet Presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama, while not in the best interests of school policy, should not be punished in the manner described above. The opportunity to interact with a United States Senator and Presidential candidate in a one-on-one setting is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a teenager. In a time when so many of their peers feel like the electoral process ignores their feelings, Mr. Saltry and Mr. Daniel are a breath of fresh air in their enthusiasm for the issues and the opportunity to express themselves to Senator Obama.





We, the undersigned, suggest the following course of action in this matter:





1. A written statement of this breach of school policy be included in the permananent records of both Mr. Saltry and Mr. Daniel. This statement should only express the admininstration's disappointment in the decisions of these young men to make a decision to leave campus without notifying a teacher or other party of authority, but commend them for taking such a passionate interest in one of the most important Presidential elections of the past fifty years.





2. Mr. Saltry and Mr. Daniel should have to provide a brief document explaining their actions and an understanding why the administration has frowned upon them.





To the best of the creator of this petition's knowledge, these young men have conducted themselves honorably to this point in their high school careers. One rash decision that did not really "harm" anyone should not put such a blemish on their permanent records and should not cost Mr. Saltry the Presidency of his class - which he has undoubtedly worked so hard to obtain and maintain - mere weeks before Graduation.
