Turnitin is a electronic system developed by iParadigms, LLC that checks an essay against submitted papers and against the internet in order to stop plagiarism. Whilst plagiarism is and should be the highest academic offence it violates the intellectual property rights of students and presumes guilt. iParadigms financially benefits by stealing the work of students. Worst of all it presumes guilt since in universities which use Turnitin the number of students who plagiarise is found to be small.
