Unwarranted Censorship at Park School |
To: School AdministrationRecently, a student at the Park School of Baltimore made a photoshopped picture of another student and uploaded it to facebook. The student in the picture then set it as his profile picture after the first student told him to. The picture was a joke. The picture contained the student huddled in a corner, hiding his eyes. The following text was photoshopped into the picture;
"Holy shit it's [student]. What a fucking baller"
"He has an Axe (this took place at a Halloween party, the student was dressed as a priest and there was a toy Axe learning up against the wall) and he WILL fuck you up"
"This mother fucker keeps his carpet cleaned and vacuumed"
"This kid gets absurd amounts of pussy. sometimes he has to hide in the corner and shield his face so girls won't recognize him and try to have sex with him."
"This man doesn't follow trends, he starts them. Where else could you find such a sexy yellow pillow? (text placed over a yellow pillow)"
"His candle is a deer. A fucking deer. This deer candle makes girls wet (text placed over a candle holder in the shape of a deer)"
It's true that some of these statements are objectifying at their core. And if you feel like these statements create an inhospitable learning environment then don't sign this petition. But if you feel like in the context of a joke, these kinds of statements happen all the time at Park and you protest the punishment of students involved with this incident, sign this petition and help protest.
The punishments for the students involved in this situation are excessive and inconsistent with how Park has treated similar situations. If Park is willing to endorse Thong Song as a Valentine-o-gram, then it is absurd for them to be surprised and upset about similar language being used by its students, especially outside of school.
Our logic is that if we get a large portion of the student body saying that this doesn't create an inhospitable learning environment, then any punishment for these statements would be deemed pure censorship, which goes directly against Park School's philosophy.
Thank you.Sincerely,
