Freedom of Tibet |
To: Chinese Government
Today, Tibetans are passing through a very critical period. The very survival of the Tibetans as a people and their unique culture are under severe threat. We would therefore like to express our deep concern regarding this matter, but also our deep appreciation towards the people who are taking initiative, interest in and support the Tibetan people's non-violent efforts for freedom and justice.
We remain committed to finding a lasting solution that will mutually benefit the Tibetans as well as the Chinese people. We support the Dalai Lama in His seeking genuine autonomy for Tibet within the constitutional framework of the People's Republic of China. We all are asking you to acknowledge the importance of protection and preservation of Tibetan identity, culture and Tibet's fragile environment.
The issue of Tibet is not merely a question of the survival of a people with their own distinct history and culture, it also has direct bearing on the fate of this world and Asian peace, and particularly upon the relationship between the world's two most populous nations: India and China. At stake is also the serious question of human rights, as enshrined in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the world body's efforts to put an end to the era of colonialism and expansionism. Even the Chinese people themselves do not agree with the present Chinese system of governance and are demanding changes.
Last, but not least, we would like to express our gratitude to the Chinese officials and the international community for taking interest in this delicate problem and have dedicated important resources to the present dialogue process.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
