Alton Village By-Pass |
To: Staffordshire Moorlands District CouncilOn the 18th August 2008, a group of 72 people after a day out were involved in a coach crash on a dangerous and narrow piece of road just outside Alton Village. As a result of the accident, one person died and a few were seriously injured and more suffering from shock and minor injuries. The residents of the village and the local businesses from the area have debated a bypass for the past few years but no agreement from either the locals or the local council, Staffordshire Moorlands District Council (SMDC). If the transport infrastructure was in place prior to this horrific tragedy, this would not have happened. I want to petition the local council, SMDC, to start talking to the locals again and for the bypass to be started as soon as possible to prevent this from happening again. If the bypass was constructed, it would help the local community, stop traffic and noise pollution going through an ancient village where the roads are not designed for the volume of traffic and boost local business and economy. At busy periods, they have problems with traffic going through Alton Village where there are traffic jams. In the current climate of the credit crunch, more and more people are spending days out in the local area and UK rather than going abroad. This is resulting in a day out getting more popular which is more traffic at unusual times in local communities and roads like Alton Village. We would like to see an assurance from SMDC for some action to be taken and at least planning permission given within the next 3 years. Pembrokeshire County Council in South Wales gave permission for better roads and access to a new holiday development next to Oakwood Theme park and it was finished last year. This new road access is directly next to the Pembrokeshire Coast National park which requires a high level of consideration which took a total of 4 years from start to finish. Why are SMDC dragging their feet when it comes to their rules and regulations when it comes to this vitally essential new bypass to stop traffic congestion through the surrounding villages for people who are going on a day out to tourism places within the 10 mile radius of Alton, Denstone and Farley Villages?
Sincerely,
