Pakistan:
Freedom for Mukhtaran Bibi
Bibi must be free to travel abroad
Mukhtaran is a well known human and women’s rights activist in Pakistan who has been prevented from leaving Pakistan. She was 31 years old when she was abducted and gang-raped by 4 men of a village tribe in June 2002. This is not just another headline about yet another violation of human rights in Pakistan. Mukhtaran is a woman who has managed to turn her own devastating experience into a heroic struggle for all women in Pakistan and the neighbouring countries.
We the undersigned are extremely concerned about Mukhtaran’s welfare and situation. She has been on house arrest, denied visits by her lawyer and has been banned from leaving Pakistan. The government of Pakistan is responsible for the misery Mukhtaran has suffered and is suffering. We demand freedom of speech and organisation for Mukhtaran in Pakistan and her free travel abroad. She must be freed and all restrictions on her movement in Pakistan (including her travel abroad)must be lifted immediately.
We the undersigned totally support Mukhtaran’s heroic struggle to highlight her own situation and that of millions of women in Pakistan and abroad.
Sincerely,
