Mike Greenwell for 1988 AL MVP |
To: Major League BaseballWe, as fans of "integrity", feel that a great injustice has been done.
We, as fans of "sportsmanship", feel that competition should be - above and beyond anything else - honorable and honest.
We, as fans of "fair play", feel that taking short-cuts and cheating is a despicable way to take advantage of the rules.
We, as fans of our "heros", feel that respect, admiration, and due reward belong only to the truly worthy.
We, as crusaders for legitimacy, feel that justice must be done, no matter how long after-the-fact.
We, as moral human beings, realize that just because something isn't "illegal" or "against the rules" doesn't mean it's "right" or "fair".
We, as fans of the sport, call upon Major League Baseball to create a new precedent.
We call upon Major League Baseball to punish cheaters.
We call upon Major League Baseball to strip Jose Canseco of the 1998 AL MVP award on the grounds of behavior detrimental to baseball, on the grounds that his accomplishments were achieved by cheating via performance enhancing drugs, and on the grounds of his blatant disregard for legitimate competitiveness.
We call upon Major League Baseball to rightfully and retroactively name fomer Boston Red Sox left-fielder MIKE GREENWELL as the 1988 AMERICAN LEAGUE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER.Sincerely,
