Keep Halle Berry Out of X3

We, the undersigned, are imploring FOX studios to stick to their guns and not offer a contract to Halle Berry to play the role of Storm in the upcoming X-Men movie. In both X1 and X2, Halle has proven herself to be the weak link in an otherwise strong cast. Critics are nearly unanimous in their opinion that Ms. Berry was the wrong choice for the role of Ororo Munroe, and among X-Fans, her poorly delivered lines, "here-today-gone-tomorrow" accent and overall mailed-in performance has made her quite the laughingstock.

While it is arguable that Ms. Berry only had a small part to work with, one needs look no further than the roles of James Marsden, Famke Janssen, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos and Shawn Ashmore to nullify that excuse. These were supporting cast roles that were done very well because the actors had the talent to play them, as well as the humility to not have a “my role isn’t big enough!” attitude. We also find it laughable that while Ms. Stamos and Mr. Alan Cumming sat through makeup for hours a day, Ms. Berry found wearing blue and white contact lenses to be unbearable. (In comparison, actor Levar Burton wore yellow contacts for his role on "Star Trek" for years on end.) Certainly, a so-called “real” actress who demands more money, more lines and less time spent shooting should be able to handle something as small as contact lenses.

To make things worse, Ms. Berry is jerking her fans around with her "will I...won't I" attitude. One minute, she's at a comic convention begging her fans (the few and far between) to write FOX to keep her in, and the next minute she’s doing interviews saying that the role of Storm is no longer a priority to her. If a role is not a priority to an actor, casting said actor in that role is a terrible thing to do. Since Halle has vocally bashed this role over and over - going as far as to call the role a "reduction” - we don't understand why she won't just step down from the X3 project, except for her own greed. It's more than obvious that Halle simply does not care for this role, and will continue to mail in her performances as long as she's allowed to get away with it. In the meantime, the legacy of Ororo Munroe suffers – not only in the movie, but in the comics, where Storm’s character is now being mirrored to match her weak, spineless persona in the movie!

We are not suggesting that Storm suddenly take a trip to Africa and not be in X3, mind you. There are plenty of wonderful African-American actresses who can fill this role and give it the attention and respect that it deserves, including (but not limited to:) Angela Bassett, Gabrielle Union, Nona Gaye, Iman, Grace Jones, and Vanessa Williams. We're not arguing that Halle Berry is a bad actress; we're simply stating that in no way is she suitable for this role.
