We call upon the Senate to urgently establish an inquiry into the Australian live animal export trade.
We would like the Senate to investigate all areas of the trade, in particular, but not limited to, animal welfare issues both in international waters and on Australian soil.
We would also call upon the Senate to implement change regarding the self-regulation of the live animal export trade.
We urge the Senate to deliver clear and honest representation of numbers of illness/injury and death of exported live animals.
We urge Government investigation into the alleged harrasment of veterinarians on the ships and demand that there be a government ombudsman established in foreign ports to allow for a truly independent and honest representation of deaths and illness on board ships.
We would also like the Senate to investigate the option of abolishing the live animal trade, opting instead for the trade of Australian slaughtered carcasses. These animals would be slaughtered in Australia according to pre-determined religious instruction.
