Keep The Horns

To:  The Minnesota Vikings

This petition is presented BY fans of the Minnesota Vikings, FOR fans of the Minnesota Vikings, for the purpose of keeping the horned helmet as a part of the current Vikings uniform.

Over the years, there have been subtle uniform changes that have developed into the current uniform, but the horns have always remained the same. Stripes have been added and modified to the sleeves of the jerseys, purple pants have been worn, and we are certain that the color of the jersey has gone through a few different shades of purple. But the one symbol that all Vikings fans recognize as a constant is the horns.

The horns represent an unfinished project. The great teams of the late 60's and 70's and the 1987, 1998, and 2000 teams all made a run at the ultimate goal of a world championship under the same horns. To change the helmet design and take away the horns would essentially tell those past great teams that the Vikings were giving up on that era. Changing the horns would change the identity of the team. It would create a dividing line between the past generation of heroes and all they tried to accomplish, and the new generation. It would send the old Vikings teams into the pages of history to be looked upon as the team that "almost got there." We say that we should keep the faith alive; we say that we should try to remain the same identifiable Vikings team until we win the Championship that has eluded us thus far. We say that we should honor our childhood heroes by finishing what they started, under the same horns that they played under. We say that we should not write off the history of the horned generation until we finally bring honor to the horns.

As Vikings fans, we have traveled rough roads, but that does not mean we are willing to give up. Changing the horns would essentially be making the statement that the Vikings have given up and started anew. We say that we should finish what we started. We say that we should give our past greats a proper burial and send them to Valhalla under the horns.
