42000 Dental Professionals Against Crest Whitestrips

Proctor and Gamble is now promoting Crest WhiteStrips in a TV commercial which states that “42,000 dentists think enough about WhiteStrips to sell this product in their own offices.” P & G was served notice by members of the dental profession years ago that the marketing of whitening products belonged in the hands of dentists, and should not be an over-the-counter product.

P & G, when it first began marketing WhiteStrips, it did so only through dental offices. It built its credibility on the backs of the profession it relies upon for product (Crest toothpaste and brushes) endorsement. It then turned its back on us, and took away a niche that could have become a symbiotic relationship.

When that happened, a cadre of dental professionals stopped doing business with P & G. The A.D.A. took no action to keep whitening within the domain of its professionals. Why? Could it have been the large amounts of money that P & G spends advertising in its journals?

We, the undersigned dentists demand that P & G cease their over-the-counter marketing of whitening products, and desist from marketing their product on the reputation of the dental community at large. We call upon the A.D.A. to use its influence to disseminate the message to the public that there are so many variables associated with tooth whitening, that before any whitening is undertaken, it should be by the prescription of a practicing dentist. I, for one will not buy or dispense samples of any P & G product until such time as Crest Whitestrips are gone from supermarket, pharmacy and convenience store shelves.

Please pass this reference on to all the dentists on your distribution list. We need more than 42,000 signatures to be able to state that “Even more dentists feel that this product does not belong in the hands of the lay public, and that whitening, to be done safely and properly should only be performed by a licensed dentist.”
