PETITION TO PROTEST THE PROPOSED PLAN FOR THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE
AUTHORITY TO DISINTER AND REBURY ALL 3,500 BODILY REMAINS THAT ARE IN THE HUDSON
COUNTY BURIAL GROUND, LAUREL HILL, SECAUCUS, NJ INTO A COMMON GRAVE


Judge Olivieri, the undersigned seek your intervention to prevent the New Jersey Turnpike Authority from disinterring the bodies buried in the area known as Hudson County Burial Grounds at Laurel Hill, Snake Hill, Potter’s Field and the Cemetery at The Hudson County Mental Hospital, Poor House, Alms House, Hudson County Insane Asylum, Hudson County Penitentiary, just a few of the names being used to call the cemetery that is located in what was once part of North Bergen, New Jersey and is now called Secaucus, New Jersey. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority plans on moving the bodies to as many as THREE cemeteries, in which one MAY NOT BE LOCATED IN HUDSON COUNTY. The at-hand NJTA proposal indicates their intent to rebury these remains in an en masse or common grave. As you may know, these cemeteries – including but not limited to the Hudson County Burial Ground - is believed to have been in use from 31 December 1880 till it’s closing on 13 April 1962. The cemetery is believed to contain over 3,500 burials in over 1,200 plots.

This petition is to inform all those involved that the undersigned, living, lineal descendants or supporters as such:
a. Do NOT consent to any bodies or remains of persons being disinterred and reburied in an en masse grave.
b. Desire, if the Court permits such disinterment, that:
The courts will allow those who come forth with proof of person(s) or remains of person(s) interned at the above mentioned cemetery the right to claim those remains.
The courts will allow those with claim to remains in the above mentioned cemetery a reasonable amount of time to seek and secure those remains that they have proof of a claim to.
The New Jersey Turnpike Authority must fully help those with a claim to remains seek and recover said remains.
