Mother’s Day Radio™ |
To: the owners, executives, and to those it will concern at Clear Channel Radio, Viacom/Infinity, Radio One, all other media companies, all of your affiliate radio stations, and to all independent radio stations; to the owners, executives, and to those it will concern at Universal, EMI, BMG, Warner Music Group, Sony Music, other major record labels, your affiliate record labels, and to all independent record labels; to the major recording artists; and to the community of consumers who patronize these corporations for music and/or other goods and servicesMother’s Day Radio, a project of Spirit Awakening Foundation, is a coalition of men, women, teenagers and youth across the country concerned about the overwhelming portrayal of women as devalued sexual objects in today’s popular music.
The undersigned men, women and youth ask that you…
Stop allowing for the denigration, objectification, and/or marginalization of women through music.
One of our supporting organizations, Teen Outreach Program (TOP) St. Louis, is a dynamic group of youth, 14-17 years of age. In an attempt to support the creation of songs with beats and rhythms that they enjoy, performed by some of their favorite artists, with lyrics that respectfully represent the women that they learn from and value in their daily lives, the TOP teens have this to say:
“We are behind this movement because women brought us into this world and it is not right to disrespect them. Upon researching lyrics, we found lyrics that objectify women, such as saying they should sell their bodies or strip. We found lyrics that call women inappropriate names, such as b***h, wh***, trick, slut, etc. We would like to hear songs on Mother's Day weekend of 2007 with a Soul, R&B, Hip-Hop, and Rap flavor that show women as queens, equals, and people who bring life into this world.”
In this light we make a three-fold request for the weekend of Mother’s Day 2007:
1. To the media companies and radio stations we request one day of radio that plays no songs containing lyrics that emphasize the body parts and sexual attributes and activities of women. In its place, we request the air play of songs that highlight and recognize the strength, honor, value and wisdom of women.
2. To the record labels and recording artists we request the creation and release of a Mother's Day Album with lyrics reflecting the holistic value of a woman. The songs on this album will serve as substitute for some of the more sexually explicit songs that will not be played on the air that day.
3. To the people of our community, society and world we request that we put our collective buying power behind the release of this Mother’s Day Album and support the idea that non-sexual, positive messages do sell.

Sincerely,
