Protest Against Withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty

To:  President Bush and members of Congress

We, the undersigned, protest President Bush’s unilateral decision to withdraw from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with Russia. We call on him to reverse his decision. We call on Congress to fight for a full public debate of this issue.

Deploying weapons into space will not ensure a peaceful future for the world, it will destroy its possibility by undermining the meaningful strides made towards peace in the past. There are much more pressing issues right now, including concentrating our efforts and resources on what we know to be the more likely threats to our security.

It is important to support and maintain a strong military, but the military is not a builder of peace. The cause of peace is forwarded by human understanding and agreements between nations that last longer than the leaders that forge them. Building a missile defense system now will make its necessity a self-fulfilling prophecy. The health of our nation can only partially be measured by the health of our economy and we can always recover from bad times. But we can never recover from a headlong rush into weaponizing space, escalating tensions all over the world and forsaking the strides made towards peace in the past.
