Condemn Neve Gordon's Attack on Israel

Israel Academia Monitor* petition to condemn Neve Gordon's attack on Israel

(Neve Gordon heads the Politics and Government Department at Ben Gurion University)

The West adheres to and promotes free speech and academic freedom. Indeed, by virtue of this noble value the media have tolerated a plethora of opinions. But in the recent article by Neve Gordon that appeared in the LA Times, he calls for a boycott of Israel because it is an "Apartheid State." Later he modified his opinion to a "gradual" boycott but did not change his position.

To suggest that Israel is an Apartheid State and that it should be boycotted is no less than an abomination in light of Israel's social-political reality. Some commentators point to their right to express treasonous ideas. We indicate our right to criticize them.

We call upon Ben Gurion University to:

1. Fully condemn Gordon's call for the boycott of Israel
2. Dismiss him as chair of the department of Politics and Government
3. Dismiss him from membership in any university committee
4. Make all his courses non-compulsory
5. Deny him any travel and research funding

We advise students to refrain from enrolling and attending Neve Gordon’s courses.


This petition is based on the understanding that Gordon is causing severe damage to the State of Israel as well as to Ben-Gurion University which is a state university and is funded by the Israeli tax payers.

המערב דבק ותומך בעקרון חופש הביטוי ובמיוחד בחופש אקדמי. ואכן תחת המסווה של ערך נאצל זה הנייר וגלי האתר גילו סובלנות רבה למגוון רחב של דעות. אולם במאמרו האחרון של ניב גורדון בלוס אנג'לס טיימס הוא קורא לחרם על ישראל עקב היותה "מדינת אפרטהייד". מאוחר יותר הוא סייג את דבריו בקריאה לחרם "מדורג" אך אין בכך כדי לשנות את עמדתו.

טענתו שמדינת ישראל היא אפרטהייד וכי יש להטיל עליה חרם היא טענה נתעבת לאור המציאות החברתית-פוליטית של מדינת ישראל. באותו אופן שאנשים מבטאים את זכותם לדעות בוגדניות, בידי אחרים נתונה הזכות לבקר אותם.
אנו קוראים לאוניברסיטת בן גוריון:

1. לגנות באופן מוחלט את קריאתו של ניב גורדון לחרם על מדינת ישראל
2. לסלקו ממשרת ראש המחלקה לפוליטיקה וממשל
3. לסלקו מכל ועדות האוניברסיטה
4. להביא לכך שלא ילמד קורסי חובה
5. לעצור מענקי מחקר וקרנות ואת מימון נסיעותיו

אנו מבקשים מהסטודנטים להימנע מלהירשם או להשתתף בקורסים של ניב גורדון

עצומה זו מבוססת על ההבנה כי גורדון גורם נזק ממשי למדינת ישראל ולאוניברסיטת בן גוריון השייכת למדינה וממומנת מכספי משלם המיסים

Petición de la Israel Academia Monitor para repudiar el ataque de Neve Gordon a Israel



(Neve Gordon es el jefe del Departamento de Política y Gobierno de la Universidad de Ben Gurión)



El Mundo Occidental mantiene y promueve el derecho a la libre expresión y a la libertad académica, y por consiguiente reconoce que en los medios de comunicación se expresan diversas opiniones.



Neve Gordon, en su reciente artículo, aparecido en el LA Times pide que se realice un boicot a Israel, estado que, según él, practica el apartheid. Aunque luego, modificó su pedido a un "boicot gradual", no cambió su posición.



Expresar que Israel es un estado apartheid y que debe ser boicoteado es una infame falsificación de la realidad socio-política de Israel.



Gente que escribe esa clase de libelos y artículos difamatorios tienen el derecho de expresar sus opiniones. Y nosotros tenemos el derecho de criticarlos y repudiarlos.



Por la presente pedimos a la Universidad de Ben Gurión que:



1. Repudie, en la más clara forma, el pedido de boicot a Israel hecho por Gordon.

2. Destituya a Gordon de su puesto como jefe del Departamento de Política y Gobierno de la Universidad Ben Gurión.

3. Expulse a Gordon de todos los comités universitarios donde actualmente es miembro.

4. Haga que sus cursos no sean obligatorios para los estudiantes sino de su libre elección.

5. Cancele la financiación de los fondos que la universidad otorga a Gordon para investigación y viajes.



A los estudiantes de la Universidad Ben Gurión les aconsejamos que no se matriculen en los cursos de Neve Gordon y que no atiendan sus conferencias.



Esta petición se basa en el hecho que los artículos y los actos de Neve Gordon tienen como intención causar grave daño tanto al Estado de Israel como a la Universidad Ben Gurión, que es una universidad estatal, financiada por los impuestos que pagan los ciudadanos de Israel
