Help the straydogs in Istanbul

Dear Mr. Kadir Topbas,

The beautiful and for tourists interesting city of Istanbul is facing, as is getting more and more commonly known, a huge stray dog problem. Thousands of dogs are living an uncertain life in the streets of your city.
More and more tourists from the Netherlands and Germany are bringing home horrible stories about dogs living a dreadful life being hunted by citizens and municipal dog catchers.
We have seen the pictures of dogs being mistreated by citizens just for fun or as a result of fear, fear caused by lack of information and education.
We know about dogs being poisoned by the authorities or being caught by municipal dog catchers to be imprisoned in poor “shelters”, shelters that would not even deserve to be called that way in our countries.
You probably know that there is no such problem as street dogs in our countries as every dog owner knows his responsibility and most dogs are being neutered. Very few dogs are dumped and in the rare case that some uncivilized human being dumps a dog, it is rescued, sheltered, neutered and re-homed.
The voice of people wanting to boy-cot tourism to your country for this reason is getting stronger and stronger.
However we also know that there are several organisations in your city willing and able to solve this problem in a more dignified and human way.
This solution called Neuter and Release is authorized by the WHO and the WSPA and has proved to be the solution of the stray dog problem in many other cities in the world.
We,the undersigned, make an urgent appeal on you to cooperate with these organisations, and especially with S.H.K.D. Sahipsiz Hayvanlari Koruma Dernegi and start a program of Neuter and Release in all Istanbul municipalities and at the same time pointing put to you citizens that their fear for street dogs has no rational ground at all.
