Dear Friends:

Puppy mills are part of a sick trade that supply pet stores and research laboratories with a steady stream of animals. The awful truth is that thousands of dogs are dying and suffer horrible forms of abuse including starvation, cannibalism and lives spent in extreme physical and psychological distress. Puppy mills are underground operations, conveniently hidden from public scrutiny. It is therefore difficult to eradicate them.

The problem will not diminish until legislation is in place that would BAN THE SALE of puppies and kittens, and dogs and cats in pet stores. Legislation is needed at the national level, which would ONLY ALLOW PET STORES, working in conjunction with charitable organizations, TO ADOPT OUT ANIMALS. A number of pet stores across Canada and the United States are already working with the SPCA in an effort to help adopt out healthy pound pets and stamp out the puppy mill trade. Let your money do the talking by refusing to deal with establishments that sell these animals, and let them know why.

Please help stop the cycle of greed. Add your signature to this online petition and send it to others. At the end of the year the signatures will be forwarded to The Hon. Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada for action. A copy will also be made available to the Canadian SPCA, The Humane Society of the United States, the American SPCA, and PETA.

To quote Dr. Albert Schweitzer: “Until we extend the circle of our compassion to all living things, we will not ourselves find peace.” For the sake of the animals, let us continue to fight the good fight.
