Since the end of May, 270 unionized Boston College facilities staff have been struggling to renegotiate their contracts with our University. Throughout this process BC administrators have been demanding the removal of Article 18 from their contract. Article 18 prohibits the University from hiring outside labor for the purpose of eliminating work or overtime for these 270 members of our BC community. Without Article 18 the University is free to hire underpaid and under-benefited, non-union employees to reduce the number or replace completely these 270 persons. To allow this possibility would undermine the mission of our Jesuit Catholic community to live justly together.
As such we, the undersigned, ask that BC do two things:
1. Stop threatening the livelihoods and job security of these workers; and
2. Negotiate with the union in a manner consistent with the Universitys Catholic and social mission.
