Change Fairwood Community's Three Boundary Schools

The neighbors and residents of Fairwood Community in Bowie hereby petition the Prince George’s County Board of Education to change the boundaries for the elementary, middle, and high schools our children attend. The performance of all three of our boundary schools – Glenn Dale Elementary, Thomas Johnson Middle, and Duval High – is unacceptable to our residents who have higher expectations both for our children and for the schools they attend.

We ask that you change the boundaries for elementary school to Tulip Grove Elementary. Unlike Glenn Dale ES, which is overcrowded, Tulip Grove is underpopulated and equidistant from our community. Although the broad changes you are considering for central county/outer beltway would be effective August 2010, we ask that you make an exception and redraw this Tulip Grove boundary for the coming 2009-2010 school year. There is no reason our kids should attend an underperforming, overcrowded school when there is ample space in a nearby, higher performing school.

In addition, we ask that you redraw the boundaries for middle school to include Fairwood in Samuel Ogle Middle School, which is closer to Fairwood than Thomas Johnson and would place our Bowie neighborhood in a Bowie school.

Finally, we ask that when you redraw the boundaries for high schools this fall, that you place our Fairwood community into the Bowie High boundary. This again would place our Bowie neighborhood in a Bowie school, physically closer to our community.
