Petition for the recognition of ChaldoAssyrians in the new constitution for Iraq |
To: The Honorable George W. BushPresident of the United States of America
Dear Mr. President:
As an American, I am very concerned about the proposed Iraqi Constitution, which is about to become the law of the land. This current proposal does not recognize the ChaldoAssyrian Christians. These ancient and indigenous people of Mesopotamia must be protected otherwise, they will remain second-class citizen in their ancestor’s land or they will flee into the growing Diaspora in Europe, Australia, Canada and the United States.
We ask you to correct this injustice for the sake of building a real democracy in Iraq. The rights that the ChaldoAssyrians seek are as follows:
Language: that the language of the ChaldoAssyrians, Syriac (based on ancient Aramaic) be taught wherever members of the community resides.
Representation: that ChaldoAssyrians be constitutionally guaranteed fair representation in the three branches of the government, the executive, the legislative and the judiciary.
Recognition: that ChaldoAssyrians be recognized as the indigenous people of Iraq and a community with its own distinct culture.
Self-Administered Territory: if a form of territorial federalism is accepted, there must be provisions for an administrative unit in the Nineveh plain to protect the culture of ChaldoAssyrians.
Sincerely,
