Canada Customs has no business looking in my laptop! |
To: Hon. Stockwell Day, Minister, Canada Border ServicesCanada Border Services has a policy of verifying the electronic files on laptops or other media of persons entering Canada through international border crossings, (by land or at the airport). The stated reason for this is to prevent the distribution of child pornography, hate literature or other materials deemed "obscene" into Canada.
The ease of transferring files over the internet, through international mail (diskettes, CD's, memory sticks, etc...) makes this entire exercise completely absurd, pointless and costly.
The inspection of electronic files by border agents is a flagrant violation of our most basic constitutional rights (expression, thought, association etc..) Furthermore, it may provide Canada Border Services with the ability to use the search results for other purposes "fishing expeditions", into other areas (copyright infringement, tax avoidance, etc...)
With this petition, we the undersigned, demand that Canada Border Services abolishes its arbitrary search and seizure of electronic files unless a search warrant issued by a judge of appropriate jurisdiction is produced.
Sincerely,
The Canada Customs has no business looking in my laptop! Petition to Hon. Stockwell Day, Minister, Canada Border Services was created by and written by Alain Mulaire (alain@mulaire.com).
