Revert to Gillespie Road tube station name |
To: Ken Livingstone, Mayor, London AssemblyDear Ken Livingstone,
In 1932 a little piece of Islington's heritage was trashed when Gillespie Road tube station
on the Piccadilly Line had its name summarily changed to "Arsenal". There is no place in the locality called Arsenal. There was, of course, a football club, but that is moving away in 2006, rendering the adopted name ridiculous.
There are, as you may know, a road and a much-loved ecology park named Gillespie, and the Edwardian station signs bearing the original name GILLESPIE ROAD still stand proudly on the walls of the platforms there.
We are urging TfL to take the popular step of reverting to the historic original name in place of its soon-to-be non-sensical "Arsenal".
Many thanks.Sincerely,
