Coventry needs a better skatepark |
To: Coventry City CouncilCoventry is at the heart of the England - right in the middle of the country. For decades a healthy skateboard scene has existed in the city, with hundreds of people of all ages learning to skateboard and embracing the culture, making Coventry skateboarding what it is today. Despite having a very active scene and being the home of a shop that sponsors two X-Games medallists (Sam Bosworth and Sam Beckett, who both skate for Coventry's only skater owned shop Ride), many of the skateboarders in Coventry have often felt as though the facilities on offer in the city aren't as good as the top quality skateparks that are being built elsewhere. On Sidewalk skateboard magazine's "skatepark map 2009", none of the parks in the Coventry and Warwickshire area were mentioned, indicating to many people that the facilities in Coventry didn't pro-actively help the cities scene, therefore making Coventry a "dead space" for skateboarding in the eyes of the UK scene. Essentially, there isn't a skatepark in this city to put Coventry skateboarding on the map compared to other areas of the UK with much better skateparks (from large cities like Nottingham to small villages like Saffron Walden in Essex).
As many skaters, bmxers and rollerbladers in Coventry have said before, this may be down to a lack of communication between the intended user group and the council. For years many skateboarders have been asking the council for a new skatepark, with rumours trickling through of new parks, and then rumours dying down again as the plans are laid to rest. The number of people skateboarding in Coventry has grown rapidly over the last 2 years, meaning that the small facilities provided thus far will not be big enough or interesting enough to keep skaters within the skateparks - and this will lead to a larger increase in people skating in the city centre, and running into unexpected fines or incidents with security guards and police officers. As participents and fans of skateboarding, bmxing and rollerblading, we feel that a new skatepark facility should be built in Coventry, either by extension to the hugely popular memorial park facility or at a site selected by the skatepark user group.Sincerely,
