We are calling on the pet food industry in Australia to label if they are using horse meat in their pet foods. Currently there is no requirement that the ingredients of pet food list if horses are used (simply being listed as "animal by-products"). Horses in Australia are subjected to horrendous conditions in the lead-up to being slaughtered. It is not the case that just the sick and old horses end up being pet food, horses in their prime and even young foals are being killed and canned. We wish to be able to make the choice ourselves whether we buy a product that has horse meat in it for our animals. We would call on those companies who have made an ethical decision to not use horses in their products to state so on their labels that they are "HORSE SAFE". And if a company does decide that it is acceptable to use horse meat in their products they should have the courage to say they do in their ingredients.
