Challenge to Coles

Australians use approximately 5.6 billion petroleum-based shopping bags each year and while plastic bags get used for less than an hour, they can take up to 1,000 years to break down in the environment.

We the undersigned request Coles take the challenge to trial banishing single use, petroleum based, plastic bags.

We understand it is not always convenient for people to have a reusable bag on hand, and that many people choose plastic bags to reuse as bin liners.

Unfortunately a reused a plastic bag still sits in landfill and inpacts our environment.

We therefore request that Coles changes their operation to only offer biodegradable plastic bags on a "user pays" basis.

Those consumers who want plastic bags for their bins etc can pay for the biodegradable version.

While other supermarkets are on "pay per bag" they are still offering plastic.

This can be the point of difference for Coles. Putting the money usually paid for regular plastic into biodegradable bags and asking the shopper to pay the difference.

I believe paying for biodegradable bags will encourage consumers to bring reusable bags, for those who don't, the burden on the environment will be still reduced.

Come on Coles! Be the first supermarket in Australia to show that the environment is worth fighting for.
