We, the undersigned, are Canadian Kennel Club (herein known as CKC) members in good standing.
Part of the CKC mandate is to take an active role in current legislative issues dealing with the health and welfare of dogs in our society, and speak out on matters of concern to the dog-owning public."
We feel the CKC is contravening its mandate by failing to take a strong position against breed-specific legislation (BSL) in Canada. BSL unfairly targets dogs based on their breed or phenotype, and not their individual actions. Because most existing and proposed BSL targets CKC recognized breeds, eliminating the threat of breed bans should be one of the CKCs top priorities.
As Canadas largest purebred dog registry, one that is known and respected throughout the world, the CKC can be extremely influential in assisting local governments with writing fair and effective canine legislation.
As of this date,January 27th,2004, we, the undersigned, are formally requesting the CKC write and uphold a position denouncing any breed-specific ordinances in Canada. In addition, we request the CKCs assistance with providing legal representation for any CKC member in good standing, who may be threatened with breed-specific legislation (BSL) in Canada.
By speaking out publicly against BSL, and offering legal assistance to its members, the CKC is in a much better position to fulfill its mandate to protect the future of purebred dogs in Canada.
We, the undersigned, expect prompt action from the CKC regarding this issue. The personal freedom of lawful Canadian dog owners is in jeopardy. The CKC must act on our behalf immediately.
