Save Denton Gardens

Worthing Borough Council is currently deciding where the town’s replacement swimming pool should be sited. As of 4th February 2008, one of the proposed options is Denton Gardens – an historic, walled garden, gifted to Worthing back in 1922 by Alderman Denton. These gardens are adjacent to a conservation area and are backed on to by a number of Grade 2 listed buildings. The gardens are one of the few open spaces left in Worthing town centre, appear on hundreds of postcards as well as in brochures promoting the town, and are well used and loved by local residents. There are other sites available to the council, which wouldn’t result in the loss of this valuable open space, one of which is the pools current location.

We are horrified that these historical gardens could be lost to expediency and for short-term financial gain. We need to let the council know that they will face significant local opposition, if they continue with planning for the possible redevelopment of Denton Gardens. So please, indicate your support by endorsing the following:

We, the undersigned, herein register our opposition to the re-development of Denton Gardens, either through the construction of a new swimming pool or leisure complex, or arising out of the sale of the site to a third party. We further petition Worthing Borough Council to consult fully with local residents before undertaking to spend public money investigating the redevelopment of Denton Gardens and other town-centre green open-spaces and parks.
