We, the undersigned, are greatly disturbed by the amount of demolition occurring in Troy, N.Y. Historic buildings have been leveled and over 150 buildings are scheduled for demolition. Most of these are houses in Troys poorer neighborhoods.
Block development grants are being used for demolition. And, in the case of the historic marquee on the American Theater, historic review protocols have been ignored.
We urge the city of Troy to halt the demolition of all but the most unsalvageable structures. We urge the city to use funds earmarked for demolition to stabilize buildings instead of tearing them down. We urge the city to examine alternative futures for these buildings and to invite substantive public input into the process.
Demolition does not address deeper issues that lead buildings to decay. In many neighborhoods poverty, drugs and unemployment need to be addressed so that families can again care for the proud houses of Troy. Demolition puts a band-aid on the problem without stopping the bleeding. Without a comprehensive plan to stem the decay of troubled neighborhoods in Troy, we fear more buildings will fall victim to the wrecking crane.
We call on Mayor Tutunjian and Senator Bruno to reverse the citys zero tolerance demolition initiative in favor of stabilization and long-term planning. The future of Troy is in its old buildings. Please develop, dont destroy, Troy.
