As noted, all white web pages uses about 74 watts to display, while all black pages uses only 59 watts. I tought I would do a little math and see what could be saved by moving a high volume site to the black format.

Take a look at Google, who gets about 200 million queries a day. Let's
assume each query is displayed for about 10 seconds; that means
Google is running for about 550,000 hours every day on some desktop.
Assuming that users run Google in full screen mode, the shift to a black background (on a CRT monitor) will save a total of 15 watts. That turns into a global savings of 8.3 megawatt-hours per day, or about 3000 Megawatt-hours a year. Now take into account that about 25 percent of the monitors in the world are CRT's, and at 10 cents a kilowatt-hour, that's $75,000,a goodly amount of energy and dollars for changing a few color codes.

Un estudio que afirma que los monitores de tubo de rayo catódico (CRT) consumen 74 watios para mostrar una pantalla en blanco, y 59 para mostrarla en negro. Si bien las pantallas de LCD y TFT han logrado una buena penetración en el mercado se calcula que en el mundo al menos un 25% de los monitores de computadoras son de tubo de rayos catódicos. Teniendo en cuenta que la home page de Google es la página más visitada del mundo, que es la que tiene cerca de medio planeta como página de inicio y que los datos que ofrece se verían perfectamente sobre fondo negro (texto, enlaces) y siempre como paso intermedio y nunca como destino definitivo de lectura o consulta, se puede realizar el siguinete cálculo:


Suponiendo que los 200 millones de visitas que recibe Google a diario lo hagan en modo pantalla completa y permanezcan una media de 10 segundos, sumarían 550.000 horas de conexión a la pantalla blanca cada día. El cambio de fondo de Google de blanco a negro ahorraría 15 watios por cada uno de estos usuarios, es decir, podría ahorrar 700 Megawatios por hora al ano.

So, let's make Google change his principal page(www.google.com), not another direction to black background, we don't want www.blackgoogle.com or www.googleblackaprovedbygoogle.com etc.
