Induction of Doug Sahm into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame |
To: Rock and Roll Hall of FameRock and Roll Hall of Fame Petition for Induction Draft
11/1/04
To the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation:
We, the undersigned, as fans of great and enduring rock and roll, call for the induction of Doug Sahm into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
From his first hitmaking band, The Sir Douglas Quintet in the 1960s, to his all-star ensemble, The Texas Tornados, in the 1990s, Doug Sahm was a pivotal force in rock, country, blues and Latino music, amassing fans not only in his native Texas, but across the United States and around the world.
In addition, Doug commanded the respect and affection of his musical peers; Bob Dylan, Jerry Wexler, Kris Kristofferson, Elvis Costello and Jeff Tweedy of Wilco are just a few of the many, many important artists and musical figures that Doug befriended, worked with and touched with his music over his long and diverse career.
Legendary producer Jerry Wexler has been quoted as saying, “In my opinion, he’s the greatest musician I’ve ever worked with because of his incredible versatility and range.” Jann Wenner, the founder and publisher of Rolling Stone, called Doug “a friend, a great, lovely character and a lover of all great music.”
In the best tradition of creative exploration, Doug spent his life exploring and celebrating the diverse strains of music which have found a home in Texas. As well as being a great rocker, Doug also mastered country and Western Swing, jazz, rhythm-and-blues, Tejano, Cajun, swamp-pop, blues and almost any other genre that crossed his path. A tireless advocate of the vitality and validity of all great Texas musical styles, Doug was a teacher and inspiration to other musicians. He not only played, he taught and fought to preserve a great musical legacy.
From his 1965 hit, “She’s About A Mover” (with its famous and enduring Vox organ lick) to 1996’s “A Little Bit Is Better Than Nada” (with the all-star Tex-Mex supergroup The Texas Tornados), Sahm was a tireless creative force, and a musician and innovator in the best tradition of rock and roll and American popular music.
For these reasons, we urge the induction of Doug Sahm into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the earliest opportunity.
Sincerely,
