To:  Governor James McGreevey, New Jersey Legislative Committee and the New Jersey Division of Pensions and Benefits.

We the undersigned encourage Governor McGreevey, the New Jersey Legislative Committee and the New Jersey Division of Pensions and Benefits to allow New Jersey Full-Time/Career(civil service and non-civil service) Municipal and State Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT-B and EMT-P) to transfer from the Public Employees Retirement System(PERS) into the Police and Fire Retirement System(PFRS). This request to transfer from (PERS) to (PFRS) has been brought before Former Governor Whitman and now Governor James McGreevey and the New Jersey Legislative Committee numerous times and has gone nowhere.

The Police and Fire Retirement System would guarantee New Jersey’s Career Municipal/State EMT’s the right to receive a retirement benefit at the age 55 and this would allow New Jersey’s Career Municipal/State EMT’s to retire at 25 years with 65% of their Final Base Salary and 1% each year up to 30 years service for a total of 70% Final Base Salary.

Currently in the Public Employees Retirement System we could receive retirement benefits at the age of 60. The Public Employees Retirement System calculates its retirement by years and months of service divided by 55 then it’s multiplied by our Final Average Salary and that equals the Annual Maximum.

This is next to nothing for all of the time, dedication and hard work New Jersey’s Career Municipal/State EMT’s perform throughout our careers.

New Jersey’s Career Municipal/State EMT’s stand side by side, day in and day out with New Jersey's Police Officers and Fire Fighters on the same emergency situations. We also face many of the same risks, to care for and protect the citizens of the State of New Jersey.

WHY SHOULD WE BE TREATED DIFFERENTLY?

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
