Review Economic Impact of Masters Division of Empire State Games |
There is a revised ESG petition that is being circulated, it is asking for the entire games to be reviewed as well as just Masters, I urge you to sign that one as well. This may be the end of the games unless we act now. http://www.petitiononline.com/SavESG09/petition.html
To: Governor Patterson and Commissioner AshWe, the undersigned, believe that canceling the Masters division of the Empire State Games is something that needs to be reviewed.
We have a very good understanding of the economic crisis New York State and the entire country are facing. However, we do not feel the Masters division of the Empire State Games is a drain on the economy, rather we feel it helps increase revenue in the region it is being held, some of the reasons for this follow.
The Masters division already has a participation fee which should cover most if not all costs associated with their competition. Masters athletes also have the means to pay an increased fee if needed to cover additional costs.
Masters athletes supply their own food, boarding and transportation while at the Empire State Games. These are the very costs that make the scholastic and open divisions more of a drain to the budget then the Masters division.
Masters athletes fill hotels, restaurants and other local businesses of the region holding the Empire State Games; thus increasing tax revenue as well as a boon to the local regions economy.
In conclusion, we the undersigned, are not asking New York State to reinvest tax dollars in an event which is detrimental to the states long term (or short term) economic future, however, we are asking that someone looks at the Masters division of the Empire State Games (separately from the open and scholastic divisions) and truly measures the economic impact this division has on New York States overall economic plan.
Sincerely,
