Call to WMSC to reevaluate change to F1 points system

This petition is directed to the FIA World Motor Sport Council.

A decision has been made to change the scoring system for the Formula 1 World Driver's Championship by implementing a system whereby the driver with the most number of wins in a season is awarded the World Championship. In the event of a tie, points scored is the tie breaker. The old system saw points scored for the top 8 drivers, with 10 to the winner, 8 to second place, 6 to third place and then 5 down to 1 point for places 4th to 8th.

While the old system may have been in need of an overhaul, this latest change will, we believe, cause great harm to Formula 1.

For example, one driver wins 6 races in the year and evey other race he DNFs. Another driver wins 5 races, but is on the podium for every other race. With the new system, the driver who scored the 6 wins would be World Champion. While the more consistent driver would not be rewarded. This does not seem fair.

Another example, and one we think would harm F1 in terms of exposure, income etc. would be where a driver wins the first 8 of 11 races. The rest of the year would be somewhat meaningless as the driver's title would already be decided. The interest in watching the remainder of the races would not be the same.

While the system perhaps needs changing, the new format does more harm than good. Perhaps a system of 15 points for a win, 10 for second place, 7
for third place and then 5 down to 1 for 4th to 8th place would work better, give a driver more incentive to go for a win and hopefully avoid either of the two examples given above from occurring.

We humbly ask theat the FIA WMSC reevaluate its decision to change the points system in the manner it has.
