Compression-Free High Definition Cable TV

We the undersigned, in an effort to motivate the cable companies, hereto attest that the quality of HD we receive is unacceptable. We have observed artifacts, audio and video dropouts, and frequent service interruptions during some of our favorite shows. We have called your "help" desk and received no help. We have reset our boxes, we have waited from 9am to 3pm for service calls, and we have scoured the Internet for solutions - all to no avail. We the undersigned have convinced our spouses that we "needed" a high definition TV just to get "the look" when it breaks up during American Idol. We've had to endure the endless insults and complaints that "this never happened with the old TV."

We hereby demand that Comcast, Time Warner and all other cable providers put maximum effort into giving us what we paid for - high definition TV free of artifacts, dropouts, and service interruptions. All efforts must be made including exploring new technologies, compression codecs, and reduction of channel load in order to solve the current HD issue. We will gladly give up a channel or two (especially Lifetime or Oxygen) if it guarantees that the big game comes in clear.

While we realize that demand for more HD content is high (it is important to us as well), we foresee more problems than solutions by overcompressing channels. Sure, you'll be providing more content - content that no one will be able to watch because every third word is being dropped or the picture keeps pixilating. As content providers, it is important that you increase the number of HD channels available but at the same time you need to ensure that the channels you already provide are coming in clear. So far, this has not been the case.

In your boardrooms and cigar bars you may think you are giving us what we want - content. But in actuality you are deluding yourselves. While we early adapters know the potential of HD, the general public isn't going to understand what the big deal is when they end up watching Oprah's Big Give in standard definition because the high definition version is unwatchable. Alienating the public is a one way trip to obsolescence. Time to man up and fix what you've got before your customers abandon you.

Every day, the news covers more and more stories about compression, audio and video quality, and HD. Every time they do, you look worse and worse in public's eyes. Enough is enough. You promised us high def, we paid for high def, and now we want you to deliver.
