INITIATIVE OF CITIZENS FOR THE ERECTION OF A MONUMENT ON THE MASS
GRAVE OF THE FALLEN FIGHTERS OF THE DEMOCRATIC ARMY OF GREECE

Probably is the only mass grave in the European Union
which lacks a monument reminding the event.

The night between the 11th and 12th of February 1949 (the last year of the Greek Civil war), has taken place a large attack of the Democratic Army of Greece (D.S.E.) for the over tacking of the town of Florina, Greece from the hands of the military forces of the government of Athens.
The Democratic Army lost the battle and withdrew back to the territory of its
own dominance, the slopes and heights of the mountain Vitsi, in the near vicinity, leaving behind about 700 dead men and women and wounded. The casualties of the pro-government armed forces were much fewer; they were about 40 dead and 35 unknown losses. The next coming days the bodies of the dead were shoveled with earth moving machines in a gigantic massive grave, which the winning side prepared in a cultivation field in the southeast area of the entrance of the town, the location is known as 'Hagios Georgios'. The dead of the pro government armed forces were buried in the south part of the town not too far from the massive grave of the dead fighters the D.S.E.. This particular place of burial was organized later as an official military cemetery of the Greek armed forces. In the past they have taken place official and non official discussions at Florina for the creation of a monument on the site of the mass grave where they were bulldozed the dead bodies of the D.S.E. fighters. These initiatives never were materialized, since existed many arguments and a negative climate in some part of the population.
The 8th and 9th November 2008 has taken place a two days long scientific conference aboutthe subject: "The Civil war at Prespa area: its footprints on the area and on time", after an initiative taken by the Municipality of Prespa. The conference attended researchers of the Greek Civi war (1946- 1949) male and female former fighters of the D.S.E., scientists of other different disciplines, who in collaboration with the Municipality of Prespa contributed with know how, in order to become as monuments of Moderne History the “the cave of Zahariades” and the other cave which served as hospital for the wounded of the D.S.E.. The over 700 dead fallen in the battle of Florina are still awaiting their own monument…
During the course of the Conference was created an initiative group of citizens, which is aiming at the official recognition of the need of erecting a monument on the grave of the D.S.E. fighters who have fallen in the Battle of Florina as monument of the Modern History for humanitarian reasons.
We are inviting all the official authorities, Prefecture, Municipality, Political Parties, social and cultural organizations of Florina and every citizen of Greece and the whole civilized world to undersign this petition. It will be submitted to the Directorate of the Moderne Monuments of the Greek Ministry of Culture.

Ίσως είναι ο μοναδικός μαζικός τάφος στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση
που δεν έχει γίνει μνημείο

Τη νύχτα στις 11 προς 12 Φλεβάρη 1949 (τελευταίο έτος του Ελληνικού εμφυλίου) εκδηλώθηκε η μεγάλη επιθετική επιχείρηση του Δημοκρατικού Στρατού Ελλάδας (Δ.Σ.Ε.) για την κατάληψη της πόλης της Φλώρινας την οποία υπερσπίζονταν ισχυρές δυνάμεις του Κυβερνητικού Στρατού.
Ο Δημοκρατικός Στρατός ηττήθηκε και συμπτύχθηκε στο χώρο κυριαρχίας του στο Βίτσι, αφήνοντας πίσω του 700 περίπου νεκρούς και τραυματίες και μαχήτριες. Οι νεκροί από την πλευρά του Κυβερνητικού Στρατού ήταν κατά πολύ λιγότεροι, 40 περίπου νεκροί και 35 αγνοούμενοι.
Τις επόμενες μέρες οι νεκροί αντάρτες πετάχτηκαν ως σωρός σε μια μεγάλη τάφρο που άνοιξαν οι νικητές σε χωράφι στη νοτιοανατολική περιοχή εισόδου της πόλης, περιοχή «΄Αγιος Γεώργιος». Οι νεκροί στρατιώτες του Κυβερνητικού Στρατού τάφηκαν σε χώρο στη νότια πλευρά της πόλης, σε μικρή απόσταση από τον μαζικό τάφο των νεκρών του ΔΣΕ. Ο χώρος αυτός αργότερα διαμορφώθηκε σε στρατιωτικό νεκροταφείο.
Στο παρελθόν έχουν γίνει ανεπίσημες και μη οργανωμένες συζητήσεις στη Φλώρινα για τη δημιουργία μνημείου στο χώρο όπου πετάχτηκαν με μπουλντόζες οι νεκροί μαχητές /μαχήτριες του Δ.Σ.Ε. Αυτές όμως οι πρωτοβουλίες δεν τελεσφόρησαν εξαιτίας διαφόρων αντιρρήσεων και ενστάσεων.
Στις 8 και 9 Νοεμβρίου 2008 πραγματοποιήθηκε διήμερο επιστημονικό συνέδριο με θέμα ο «Εμφύλιος στην Πρέσπα: αποτυπώματα στο χώρο και τον xρόνο.» με πρωτοβουλία του Δήμου Πρεσπών. Στο συνέδριο συμμετείχαν ερευνητές /τριες του Εμφυλίου (1946-1949), πρώην μαχητές και μαχήτριες του Δ.Σ.Ε. καθώς και επιστήμονες που ασχολήθηκαν σε συνεργασία με το Δήμο Πρεσπών για να αναγνωριστούν ως μνημεία της νεώτερης ιστορίας στην Πρέσπα η «σπηλιά του Ζαχαριάδη» και η σπηλιά όπου ήταν το νοσοκομείο του Δ.Σ.Ε. Οι 700 νεκροί αντάρτες της μάχης της Φλώρινας περιμένουν το δικό τους μνημείο...
Κατά τη διάρκεια των εργασιών του Συνεδρίου δημιουργήθηκε μια ομάδα
Πρωτοβουλίας πολιτών με στόχο την αναγνώριση του μαζικού τάφου των μαχητών/τριών του Δ.Σ.Ε. που έπεσαν στη μάχη της Φλώρινας ως μνημείο της νεότερης ιστορίας.
Καλούμε όλους τους φορείς (Νομαρχία, Δήμο, πολιτικά κόμματα, κοινωνικούς και πολιτιστικούς φορείς της Φλώρινας) αλλά και κάθε πολίτη αυτής της χώρας, να προσυπογράψουν το κείμενο προκειμένου να υποβληθεί το σχετικό αίτημα στην Εφορία Νεοτέρων Μνημείων του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού.
