Change the name of First Street Park to Randy Foye Park

The city of Newark, NJ, under the leadership of Mayor Cory Booker, is in the process of renovating 14 parks throughout the city. This is a wonderful thing. Randy Foye, NBA player with the Minnesota Timberwolves, was to be the face of one of the parks on the corner of North 3rd St and 1st St. This park is 2 houses away from where he grew up. He has a charity called the Randy Foye Foundation and he is the most successful person to come out of this city in recent memory. What's more he goes to the school on the same block and mentors the kids there. He is in there speaking to the kids all the time. He's not someone who just put up some money and walked away. He's an active NBA athlete and a role model that the kids can relate to. He has gone through a lot in his lifetime like losing both of his parents as a little kid. Yet he still became so successful. Everyone in the city knows his story and is so proud that Randy represents our Brick City in everything he does.
The point of this petition is that the city is not naming the park after him, which they are foolish not to do because of his success and community involvement. Instead they are going to slap a name like "First Street Park" on it and expect people to take pride in going there. This petition is to have the park named "Randy Foye Park" so that it's a place our residents are proud of. When we take our kids there we can tell them Randy's story and inspire them to go after their dreams just like Randy did. Randy is an inspiration to all of us and it's time we let something other than money matter. It's time we did something because it is right and it will have an impact on society. Newark needs all the help it can get to continue its turnaround and I hope you will join me in asking the mayor and council to name this park after Randy Foye so that we all have something to be proud of.
