To:  Congress, BJP,CPI(M),CPI,SP,BSP,Akali Dal,BJD,JD(U),JD(S),NCP,Shiv Sena,NC,PDP,INLD,RJD,JMM,

We the Young Adults and the Voters in the General Elections -2009 feel some of the most important issues of concern to us are:

Younger leaders and good governance

As young adults, we seek leaders who possess a vision for India similar to ours and have energy levels which will generate and implement new ideas.

The process of governance has to be more accountable to the public as the public is the largest stakeholder in the development process.

Minimum educational qualification for politicians

There should be a minimum level of educational qualification and basic knowledge about law and governance for our leaders. An educated politician can provide effective governance.

We propose a graduation degree from any recognized university as a basic qualification for an MLA or an MP. The degree should be part of the declaration of the candidate. Times have changed and an educated India needs educated leaders.

Good public transport system

A good public transport system should be the backbone of a developed country.

The present public transport system needs to be upgraded, made safer and more efficient.

An efficient public transport system also means one that uses clean fuels, is disabled-friendly and secure for women commuters..

Environment

A nationwide focus on alternative energy resources such as solar energy and the hydrogen-based fuels for cars .

To reduce greenhouse gases by 50per cent by 2050.

Cycle tracks on main streets, public transport using clean fuels, government buildings with rainwater harvesting structures , dedicated freight corridors, increasing forest cover, saving the tiger etc are some measures that should be taken.

Safety and security for all, especially women

Security for women is a non-negotiable in a developed economy.

Regardless of dress, age, social status, women should feel safe to live their lives on their terms. And yes, this applies to pubs, discos and nightclubs.

Public conveniences, especially for women

Out of the 3192 public conveniences supposed to be existing in the national capital and according to a study by a Delhi University student, only 1534 could be located.

Only 132 urinals are available for women and most of them are in a dilapidated state. Such facilities are a basic human need and a health issue.

If the capital’s public utilities are in such a state then other cities will only be worse. We need public convenience on a public-private partnership model.

Basic Sanitation and Health Facilities

This includes cleanliness and hygiene in public hospitals; standardization, and most
importantly, a follow up regime to ensure epidemics like Hepatitis and plague in Gujarat are not repeated.

We need more government hospitals in small towns and cities. If we are the future, then invest in our hygiene so that the future is promising.

Education

Education should be a fundamental right.

More colleges offering quality higher education and more opportunities for research.

Teachers in primary and middle schools and especially in government run schools need to be evaluated periodically to ensure quality education.

Same treatment to people of any state all over the country

We want strict action against people and groups who want to dictate how we live and how we move.

We don’t want self-appointed guardians of Indian culture. We want decisive action against criminal ‘guardians’ especially if they take the law in their own hands.

Encouragement of sports

We want the state to encourage young people interested in sports by giving them scholarships and providing them with resources so that they can polish their skills and do their country proud.

We want more stadiums and sports facilities. We want them in schools and colleges across the country. We want more school and college level tournaments to bring out more talent.

India has arrived on the world stage. We should today be leading or at least walking with the leaders in the world in terms of ideas as well as social development.

We are tired of the same old issues of caste, creed and religion and look forward to a positive campaign of hope and change.

We do not want leaders to tell us the weaknesses of other leaders and political parties. Tell us what your strengths are, both as a person of your party and of your political party.

We want to know what new and innovative steps you will take to make India a country counted in the world order in the coming years and not as a country which has a glorious past and nothing to show for in the future.

AND in case if we do not find a suitable candidate in the national and regional political spectrum then we shall vote for a suitable independent candidate.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
