The Food Issue In The GUC |
To: GUCiansDear Prof. Ashraf Mansour,
We -a group of students in different study groups and different academic years- would like to address an issue “concerning the food in university and food courts” that is becoming more essential and problematic every day, and by this letter we are hoping to help pointing out the problems and trying in solving them if possible.
The team guc.sit.in@gmail.com Looks forward to hear your feedback concerning the presented issues which we would be glad to relate to the rest of the students signed in the attachment.
Thank you
Issue Description
First, Number of food courts and variety of food:
* Current situation:
o There are only 2 food courts for the whole campus.
o B1: pizzas and doughnuts.
o At the C buildings: sandwiches.
* Problem:
o Not enough variety of food and also quality is not good.
o It is not enough to serve the students during the breaks (average waiting time per student to get their food is more than 5 minutes!).
* Plausible solution
o The availability of two more booths in the university would solve the congestion problem.
o Providing a Mensa with a wide variety of hot meals accompanied with a professional and hygienic kitchen.
o A wider variety of meals may be made possible buy leasing fast food companies (ex. El Tabe’e, GAD, KFC, McDonalds, Bon appétit …).
Second, The system used for the cashiers:
Current situation:
o Inventories take place during some periods of the day including break.
o There is only one cashier per booth without any kind of waiting line.
o Problem:
+ Inventories in the middle of the day prevent students from purchasing food during their only available free time.
+ Few cashiers resulting in long waiting time. And without waiting lines it is very chaotic and causes congestion.
o Plausible solution
+ Keep the system open during that time and instead inventories should take place at the end of the working day.
+ More cashiers with organized queues per booth.
Finally, the Prices:
Current situation
We understand that the current economical situation in the country is having a negative influence on the small market that we have in the GUC; nevertheless, most students consider the current inflation unjustifiable.
o Problem:
+ The GUC administration monopolizes the food market allowing no room for competition.
+ Unreasonable increase in prices which are independent of the market. (ex. the GUC Pepsi can is 25\% MORE than the normal market Pepsi can).
+ Even the prices that were raised intra-GUC are much higher than the driving increase in prices outside the GUC. Inflation in the price, for instance, from 2 pounds to 3 pounds is a 50\% increase which is considered a lot.
o Plausible solution
+ We would like the management for the food court to review the raising of the prices. Also opening up the market for competition is what we think a good idea.

P.S. If there was no proper response or no response at all from the administration, we want to organize a sit-in to demonstrate our demands. Please mention whether you're willing to participate or not.Sincerely,
