SAVE OUR NURSERY!

Hilton Nursery School first opened its doors many, many years ago. Since it has been open it has been recognised as one of the best nursery schools not just in the Hilton area but in the whole of Aberdeen. It has always had fantastic inspection results, it has well equipped classrooms and a very large green play area not found in many of Aberdeen’s nurseries, with climbing frames and lots of toys for the children to enjoy. The nursery also has a wonderful group of fully trained teaching team and nursery nurses who are always ready to help parent and child, and who also provide extra help for the children who may need it.

Aberdeen City Council (ACC) first discussed the possible closure of Hilton Nursery School to take place in the next two years, but now have proposed closure by August 2008. The parents and the Hilton Nursery team attended a meeting at St Machar Academy on Thursday the 13th of March 2008 with some of the councillors for the closure of the nursery. Every question asked by the parents was evaded and they did not really discuss Hilton Nursery School in particular but referred to it as Aberdeen school estates and avoided the subject completely. The councillors at the meeting kept referring to these three factors:

• Aberdeen City Council’s Education Budget for last year was £138,000,000 and the spent £148,000,000.

• There are 30,000 places in nurseries, primary and secondary schools all over Aberdeen and only 22,000 are taken. Aberdeen City Council feels this number will only decrease.

• Due to the fact Hilton Nursery School is a stand alone nursery Aberdeen City Council feel that if children went to a nursery that has a school on campus it would be less traumatic for the child to enter primary 1.

What the parents of children in the nursery would like to know is why close one of the best nurseries in Aberdeen to build 7 new schools which have nurseries on campus and waste more money the council obviously do not have. Also in the case of the transaction from nursery to primary being traumatic most of us all did it and turned out well, in fact it helps us interact with different people, and in that case if the council feel this would help children how long will it be before they decide to make a school from nursery straight through to year 6. Also at this meeting the councillors in charge of the meeting talk of some so called policy that 2 other councillors had never heard of.

So I am asking please sign this petition and save our nursery. Stop the council from spending money that could save our nursery and other schools in Aberdeen on things like moving to Marshall college where there isn’t even enough office space for everyone, all there trips and there expenses such as their toilet rolls! Do the right thing, Thank you.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
