HR4266, the Katie Elise & Meghan Agnes Act |
To: U.S. CongressWe, the undersigned, do call upon the members of Congress to support the passage of HR4266, the Katie Elise & Meghan Agnes Act, introduced by Reps. Allyson Schwartz and James McGovern, which would require the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) to issue mandatory safety standards to prevent accidents associated with the tip over of furniture and electronic devices, namely large televisions.
We ask that you please offer your support to the families of Katie & Meghan, as well as Richard and Darlene Pierce and all parents who have lost children in such tragic accidents, who have bravely put their grieving aside and fought to make a difference in other people's lives. Their courage and strength by putting aside their grief shows how important this legislation is. These tragedies can be avoided, and this legislation can save lives.
HR4266 is simple, common sense legislation that could save children’s lives. It would require any furniture or electronic appliances in jeopardy of tipping bear a warning label alerting consumers to the potential dangers of unsecured furniture. In addition, this furniture would be required to come packaged with anchoring devices and simple installation instructions, so it can be safely secured to wall studs.
Despite the frequency of these accidents, there are currently no mandatory safety standards in place. Now is the time to provide consumers with the information they need to ensure their child’s safety in their home.
Thank you in advance for your consideration of this request. We look forward to your support regarding this important legislation.
Sincerely,
