HR 4555: Tax Exemption for Military Student Loan Repayments Act

Please help me to encourage the Honorable Gary Miller of the 42nd District reintroduce a very deserving House Resolution ---- HR 4555: Tax Exemption for Military Student Loan Repayments Act --- that died in the House Ways and Means Committee during the 107th Congress. The gist of this legislation is that those members of the Armed Forces receiving loan repayment of student loans as part of their enlistment contracts are having to pay direct income tax on said payments. When taken into consideration that GI Bill benefits are paid out tax-free, it becomes clear that both sides are not balanced or equitable. I am trying to get this bill reintroduced during the 108th Congress, but I have met considerable apathy and passive resistance. In addition, I have started a newsgroup on Yahoo at the following address:

Below is a press statement from when the legislation was introduced. Contact your legislators. There are many people in the military who would benefit from such legislation, but are not allowing their voices to be heard because of being casualties of the fast paced War on Terrorism.

Congressman Miller Introduces Bill to Improve Military Student Loan Repayment Program

Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman Gary Miller (R-Diamond Bar) introduced the “Tax Exemption for Military Student Loan Repayments Act” on the Floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. This bill will establish tax parity between the Montgomery G.I. Benefits and the Student Loan Repayment Program.

“This bill will stop taxing the student loan repayment benefit that many highly skilled servicemen and women receive,” said Congressman Miller.

“The servicemen and women benefitting from the Student Loan Repayment Program are highly skilled, and in many cases, they could receive a higher paying job in the private sector,” stated Congressman Miller. “By taxing this benefit, we create a disincentive to serve our country.”

Under the Student Loan Repayment Program, the servicemember’s branch sends the loan repayment directly to the lender. Unless the soldier, sailor, or airman requests to have additional funds withheld from their pay, they generally end up owing the IRS each year the loan repayments are made.
