Huntsville Residents Request For Reassessment Of Property Values

To:  Weber County Assessors and Commissioners

Whereas Weber County, Utah has shown bad faith in fair taxation and property assessments to all property owners in Huntsville and the Ogden Valley;

Whereas Weber County Commissioners and Tax Assessor have publicly and privately assured that Ogden Valley property assessments and taxes would not exceed 30%;

Whereas there have not been sufficient sales in Huntsville in the past year to justify comparable fair market value judgments (only one this year);

Whereas there has been no "Truth in Taxation" notices or meeting during which Commissioners must justify dramatic tax increases;

Whereas Ogden Valley taxes are as much as six times the 22.6% average increase proposed for Salt Lake, Utah, and Davis Counties;

Whereas it appears property market values are grossly overvalued (up to 100%) based upon sparse unit sales data;

We the undersigned demand all Huntsville Town property assessments be null and void pending a thorough individual review and reassessment based upon primary and permanent resident status versus non primary status (vacation homes) and permanent occupant retirement status. Further that full consideration is given to the perturbations caused by the temporary influx of outside non permanent residents and the false inflation of property values caused thereby. We demand that a cap of no more than 30% be applied to the 2006 assessment values. This abuse has led Oregon and others to strangle tax collections via Proposition 13 style laws. With such unbridled and out of control taxation, unless reason and common decency prevail, will be checked in the near future. We appeal to your sense of common decency and fairness with our petition.
