To:  U.S. Congress

SUPPORT the removal of two murals depicting an American Indian being hanged by armed whites from the currently-abandoned county courthouse in Idaho's capital. Starting in 2008, the Idaho Legislature plans to meet in this courthouse as its century-old Statehouse undergoes a $115 million revamp. Everybody entering this courthouse is forced to walk past the murals as they climb steps to where the House and Senate meet. This year, leaders from Idaho's five American Indian tribes spent much of February inside the Capitol, campaigning on sovereignty issues including gas taxes and tribal gaming rights. Preserving these murals is akin to posting artwork depicting the gassing of Jews during World War II on any governmental office building wall in modern Germany today! Tell Arthur Hart, director emeritus of the Idaho State Historical Society and others in Idaho's historical societies that this is blatantly racist and unacceptable.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
