Iran under the role of fundamentalism is the capital of the world for execution, stoning to death and ignoring basic human rights. However European countries have been expanding their economic and political ties with Islamic Republic of Iran. As part of this policy many European countries have now declared Iran to be a "safe country", meaning that one cannot ask for refugee status if coming from Iran, since Iran is a nice democratic regime we are doing business with!
The Belgian government is negotiating with Iranian authority to deport Iranian asylum seekers whom asylum claim has been refused; the general situation in Iran is proof enough that these asylum seekers would suffer persecution upon their return.
On 19th of September, 17 Iranians left the Petit Chateau detention centre in Brussels for the ULB after receiving orders to leave the country. Dozens of their compatriots, also hoping to be granted political asylum in Belgium, joined them until some 250 were camping out on the ULB campus. Of the protesters, 31 have been on hunger strike for the past 17 days.
We undersigned, fully support 250 Iranian asylum seekers and in solidarity with them condemn anti immigration policies has been taken by Belgian Government towards Iranian asylum seekers
We demand Belgium government should:
Stop negotiation with Islamic Republic of Iran on the repatriation of Iranian asylum seekers
Declare Islamic Republic of Iran as an unsafe country
Immediately re-open all closed cases and grant Refugee status to Iranian asylum seekers.
