Free Ko Aye Aung

Ko Aye Aung was arrested on the 14th of September 1998 while a student in Yangoon, taking part in a small, peaceful protest regarding the quality of education and educational policies in Myanmar. After an unfair trial before which those arrested repeatedly asked for access to a lawyer, and were denied the right to represent themselves; Ko Aye Aung was initially sentenced to 14 years imprisonment . This was then increased to 24 years and more recently in March 2005 to 45 years.

Ko Aye Aung is imprisoned in Kalay Prison in the Sagaing division of Myanmar, which is very far from his family in Yangoon. Ko Aye Aung is suffering from malaria and has no access to medical treatment. His malaria was aggravated by cold winter weather and the fact that his exercise period was moved to the hottest time of the day. Due to the lack of resources to which he has access from the prison (food, blankets, clothing and medicine) this distance increases the severity of his imprisonment as his family cannot bring him supplies. He has also been refused access to religious texts.

Myanmar is a signatory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights- indeed it was one of the first signatories. It is in Myanmar’s interest in terms of development and sanctions as well as its duty to adhere to its human rights obligations. In light of the 2010 elections for a new government, human rights in Myanmar are essential, as a legitimate democratic government cannot succeed without regard for human rights.

Ko Aye Aung’s human rights have been violated under the articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Thus we the undersigned , members of Amnesty International and others, request :


-That Ko Aye Aung be released immediately. He was exercising his freedom of conscience, freedom of opinion, freedom of assembly and association. He was not given access to a fair, public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal

Pending his release we request :
-That in relation to Ko Aye Aung ‘s right to life, security of the person, the prohibition of degrading treatment or punishment , his right of access to a standard of living adequate for his well being, that Ko Aye Aung be given access to medical treatment and his family. Please move him closer to Yangoon.
-That Ko Aye Aung be given access to religious text so he may practice freedom of religion.

Ko Aye Aung à été arrêté le 14 Septembre 1998, à l’époque ou il était un étudiant universitaire à Yangoon. Il participait à une manifestation pacifique concernant la qualité d’enseignement et la politique d’enseignement en Myanmar. Refusés l’accès à un avocat à maintes reprises, et également refusés le droit de se représenter en cours, les arrêtés ont subi un procès injuste; Ko Aye Aung a été condamné initialement à 14 ans de prison. A la suite on a augmenté la sentence à 24 ans et plus récemment en mars 2005 à 45 ans.

Ko Aye Aung est emprisonné à Kalay Prison dans la division Sagaing de Myanmar, qui est très loin de sa famille à Yangoon. Ko Aye Aung souffre de malaria et n’a aucune accès aux traitements médicaux. Son malaria a empiré à cause du froid de l’hiver et plus tard dans l’année, par le fait que son période d’exercice a été changer aux heures plus chaudes de la journée. Vue la manque de ressources disponibles au prison (nourriture, couvertures, vêtements et médicaments) la grosse distance de sa famille accroisse la sévérité de son emprisonnement, comme sa famille n’est pas capable a lui amener des approvisionnements. On lui refuse aussi l’accès à des textes religieux.

Myanmar est signataire de la Déclaration universelle des droits de l’homme- en fait il était un des premiers signataires. C’est dans l’interet de Myanmar dans le contexte du développement et des sanctions économiques et c’est le devoir de Myanmar d’adhérer à ses obligations en matière de droits humains. Étant donné que Myanmar aura des élections en 2010, l’institution des droits humains est indispensable, car un governement démocratique légitime n’a aucune chance de succès sans le respect pour les droits humains.

Les droits humains de Ko Aye Aung ont été violé sous les articles de la Déclaration universelle des droits de l’homme. Donc nous les soussignés, membres d’Amnesty International et autres, demandons :

-La libération immédiate de Ko Aye Aung. Il exerçait sa liberté de conscience, liberté d’opinion, liberté d’assemblée et association. On ne lui a pas donneé accès à un procès équitable et publique par un tribunal indépendant et impartial.

En attendent sa relâche nous demandons:

-Qu’en relation avec le droit de Ko Aye Aung a la vie, sécurite de la personne, la prohibition contre le traitement ou punition dégradante, son droit d’accès à un standard de vie adéquate pour son bien-être, que Ko Aye Aung soit donné accès au traitement médical et sa famille. S’il vous plait, lui transférer plus près de sa famille à Yangoon pour contribuer à cette objectif.
-Que Ko Aye Aung soit donné accès à des textes religieux pour qu’il puisse pratiquer la liberté de culte.
