Petition to Reinstate Krista Lewie-Cepero to Run for Bergen Community College Student Government President |
To: Bergen Community College StudentsTo the Student Body at Bergen Community College:
The Student Government Council has made the decision not to allow Senator, Krista Lewie-Cepero, to run for the office of President. She was disqualified for not handing in a prerequisite packet on time. The packet was completed before the due date (Monday, April 6, 2009 at 5pm), but due to extenuating circumstances was not able to hand in the completed packet on the due date.
The extenuating circumstances are as follows:
- Krista went into work on Monday April, 6, 2009 at 8am.
- She had to work until 11:30pm due to a large work load.
- Due to the heavy work load and the few workers available, Krista was unable to leave the premises.
- Krista stated that this is not an every day occurrence, but rather something that happened at the last minute.
- Should you be interested, Krista's boss has written a letter on her behalf stating that she was at work and was unable to leave. *This letter will be available to you by calling her number at (973)-222-2674.*
Upon finding out she was unable to hand in the packet on the due date, Krista called the election board chair, and Student Government President, Ron Subramaniam, to make them aware of the situation. She called and texted, the election board chair, but never received a response. It was then that Krista called Ron Subramaniam to make him aware of the situation. He told her it should be fine, but to e-mail the election board chair, himself, and to copy Dr. Ralph Choonoo, the Dean of Student Life, to make them aware.
Krista met with the BCC SGC on Wednesday for their weekly meeting, April 8, 2009. Upon entering the room, Krista discovered the Senate was voting on whether or not to disqualify her-- this included members who were currently running for office. The verdict was 12, 18 to disqualify Krista from running.
Krista Lewie-Cepero has been a dedicated member of the BCC Student Government Council for 3 semesters and has been chair of the Judicial Committee for 3, as well. Krista has worked on many issues that include, but are not limited to, the Judicial Committee, Textbook Committee, Cafeteria Committee, Election Board, Strategic Planning Committee, Scheduling Grid Committee, Technology Committee, Budget Committee, as well as organized dinners for SGC, and efforts for International Students attending BCC.
