This petition opposes the support that James Dobson of Focus on the Family has given to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as well as many others of his flock, and supporters in general who are praising the contributions that this Church made in regard to Californias Proposition 8.
James Dobson through Focus on the Family has represented a light of guidance to many listeners throughout the years. They have upheld many Christian fundamentals, including the importance of truth-telling and fair procedures.
Signers of this petition are appalled that James Dobson of Focus on the Family has recently signed a petition in support of the Mormons and their Church of LTD, as well as their methods of obtaining political support for Proposition 8.
It is fully known and understood that Dobson supported Proposition 8; however, supporting the Mormon Church just because they agree on this sole issue is ridiculous. The methods that the Mormons used to sway voters include, but not limited to, scare tactics, lying, and manipulating.
Their rationale for Proposition 8 included television commercials that claimed that the proposition does not discriminate against gay people, as domestic partnerships already provide all rights. This is not true. As domestic partnerships are not nationally recognized, no federal benefits would be included. There are also a wide range of state-wide rights, such as hospital visitations and living testimonies that may be infringed upon.
They used scare tactics to sway parents by insisting that teaching children about same-sex marriage will happen unless Prop 8 passed. This is also false. California law prohibits that children can be forced, against the will of their parents, to be taught anything about health and family issues at school.
Another scare tactic used was that churches could lose their tax-exemption status. This is yet another falsehood. The court decision regarding marriage specifically says no religion will be required to change its religious policies or practices with regard to same-sex couples, and no religious officiant will be required to solemnize a marriage in contravention of his or her religious beliefs.
Quite frankly it is shocking that James Dobson, who represents the name of Focus on the Family, would support such techniques to obtain something, even if he agrees with the initial principal of Prop 8. His support for these tactics, as displayed by his signature on a petition thanking and recognizing the LTD Church for its contributions, must not be applauded by those opposing Proposition 8, or by listeners and supporters of his program alike.
We are calling on James Dobson to publically condemn the measures used in obtaining support for Prop 8, even if he agrees with the measure.
