Dear President Bush:

We implore you to withhold moving the United States Embassy from Tel-Aviv to West Jerusalem. To do otherwise would be to ignore the claims of both parties to Jerusalem, and to impose the will of the United States in favor of Israel as opposed to the Palestinians. It would be to ignore, as well, the agreement to which the United States was a party which required no changes in status of Jerusalem or any of the occupied territories until the parties themselves had resolved these issues through peaceful negotiations, observance of United Nations Resolutions, and compliance with International Laws to which the US has been a major signatory and a prime executor.


Mr. President, the US Embassy in Israel has been in Tel Aviv since 1950. There has never been an urgency to move it to West Jerusalem over that long period of time. Moving the Embassy now will alienate millions in the Middle East, jeopardize our national interests, erode our credibility, and intensify the current deadly conflict.

Throughout your campaign, you said you would allow the parties themselves, without U.S. intervention, to reach an agreement. Yet, by moving the U.S. Embassy, you will, in fact, be intervening.

Since 1948 the United States has funded Israel with cash money (totaling more than $170 billion), consultation, and military weapons. American-made helicopters and missiles are fired into homes, hospitals, and schools of Palestinians in violation of UN resolutions and International law. Surely, Mr. President, the United States can afford to exercise, among many of its options to prevent war and promote peace, its option of withholding the move of the embassy till a peaceful solution is imminent.
