This petition is requesting the overturning of a ruling by former Major League Baseball (MLB) Commissioner Fay Vincent which disallows the ability to use asterisks in MLBs record books maintained by the Elias Sports Bureau. Commissioner Vincent made this ruling in 1991 prior to the sport of baseball becoming infused with unchecked steroid usage. Steroid abuse un-leveled the playing field, and put those willing to chemically alter their bodies in position to have an unfair advantage over clean players. Because this dramatic inequity was established after Fays decree, his ruling should be overturned.
The petition is also asking for the placement of an asterisk in the baseball record books maintained by the Elias Sports Bureau next to the name of Barry Lamar Bonds, et al that have been found (whether through federal investigation, through the MLB steroid testing policy, or by personal admission) to use substances which are now illegal in the sport of baseball along with an explanation for the asterisk indicating the usage of steroids/supplements that have been banned, regardless if the abuse occurred before the substances were banned by MLB.
Allowing the All-Time Homerun record to be broken without acknowledging an admission of steroid use by Barry Bonds in grand jury testimony on December 4, 2003 sends a negative message to youth everywhere that illegal drug usage can facilitate success, such as attaining the most cherished record in all of American sports.
The time to act is now. Even if the asterisk is not instated, there will always be an invisible asterisk next to the name of Bonds and others. A definitive asterisk, however, will deliver the message that cheating will not be ignored and glorified. The credibility of the sport of baseball, the National Pastime of America, is what is at stake.
